Head lice can be common in the fall and spring months and are nothing to be embarrassed about! There are millions of cases in the United States each year. Head lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp. They do not fly or jump, and are typically spread by head to head contact. If you notice that your child is scratching or complaining of itching on the head, please examine your child's scalp for any signs of nits (eggs) or lice. The eggs are attached to the hair very near the scalp. Also, please discourage head to head contact and sharing of combs, barrettes or hats.
Our goals regarding treatment of lice in the school is to support the child and family in their effort to control and eliminate head lice, decrease school absenteeism, and maintain confidentiality of the families affected. When a student is found to have live head lice, the school nurse will notify the parent/guardian. The student will be dismissed until treatment is completed. Siblings in the district will be examined. Education will be provided to the parent/guardian regarding treatment and preventative methods. The school nurse will ensure that the classroom teacher is apprised of the situation and trained in the appropriate protocols to prevent the spread of head lice in the classroom. The nurse will check any specific student if that student is demonstrating symptoms, such as itching.
For the complete lice policy, please refer to the parent handbook.
